Before you get started…This is a demo app. A demo app to prove the need for an open infrastructure to successfully implement Digital Product Passports. Nothing more. Nothing less. Does it have an abundance of features? No. Have we put hundreds of hours into design? No. Is the app built on a set of open, competition-neutral, and global standards enabling the linking of all types of sustainability data to products, regardless of industry, company, or product category? Yes!

An upcoming EU directive will require all products to have a Digital Product Passport, providing reliable sustainability data – right down to the smallest component. With billions of products on the market, millions of manufacturers, and thousands of resellers – how will this work in practice?

The ProPare project wanted to provide a concrete example and chose to display how third-party certifications (the Nordic Swan Ecolabel) are linked to product identities and can be displayed to various players in real-time. In a next step, any type of information can be linked to a product and show everything right from basic data on product properties to complex sustainability data on areas such as recyclability, climate impact from production, and contents of components.

The ProPare project has developed a prototype for an underlying Digital Product Passport Infrastructure. The solution is built on a set of open, competition-neutral and global standards. With a common language used to identify every single unique product on the market, and a resolver linking to the right data sources, all actors – brand owners, suppliers and retailers as well as public authorities and consumers, can access relevant updated data in real-time, from multiple, decentralized sources; regardless of industry, company, or product category.
The ProPare project is a broad collaboration between the non-profit sustainability organization Axfoundation, the Swedish Trade Federation, Ecolabelling Sweden AB, GS1 Sweden (part of the global standards organization GS1) as well as trading companies, brand owners, producers, third-party certifiers and technology developers. The demo app is developed by Blue Cromos.
